Trying to SUM two seperate columns but not together as part of a search result

In PHP MySQL how to sum or not sum multiple columns?

$sql = "SELECT * ,
(SELECT
SUM(value), AS total_value,
SUM(balance) AS total_balance
FROM joblist WHERE value = :total_value AND balance = :total_balance)
FROM joblist
WHERE customer = :customer" ;

$customer = $_POST['customer'];
$statement = $connection->prepare($sql);
$statement->bindParam(':customer', $customer, PDO::PARAM_STR);
$statement->bindValue(':total_value', $total_value, PDO::PARAM_INT);
$statement->bindValue(':total_balance', $total_balance, PDO::PARAM_INT);
$statement->execute();
$result = $statement->fetchAll();
$total_value_result = $statement->fetch_assoc;

$sum = array_sum(array_column($total_value_result, 'total_value_result'));
echo $sum['total_value'];

} catch(PDOException $error) {
echo $sql . "
" . $error->getMessage();
die();
}

the table is joblist .. columns are work_order,customer,description,value,balance,staus and notes.
I can pull the data into html table but I was needing the sum of the value and balance columns that the search request pulls.

Current code in this screen doesn't work it errors out as I'm trying to accomplish this task.
I'm pulling hair out, but I really shouldn't as I'm no DBA.

thanks for any help.
